Liberal Arts Curriculum Features - Faculty of Literature

Liberal Arts Education Course

The faculty offers a highly diverse program of liberal arts, from foundation seminars to foreign languages. In the Liberal Arts Education course, students must take the year- long foundation seminars, the Logical Thought and Expression course, and the Information Management course. Students in the department of Aesthetics and Art History must take the Physical Education course. Other courses may be chosen by students in accordance with their interests.

Foundation Seminars

This is a required course for all first year students. Students work closely with a teacher in small classes and learn a range of practical academic and life skills.

Japanese Expression program

In this program, students examine Japanese culture through the study of language and literature to help them become skillful users of Japanese.? This integrated program covers not just basic skills but leads students to higher order thinking.

Arts Program

Through their encounter with the arts, students develop their sensitivity to the visual, aural and natural world. The course is structure in 3 parts moving from the allure of the arts, to art and language and then to the scene of artistic creation.

General Studies

Students are offered a choice of more than 60 different subjects, ranging from a study of the natural world to the humanities, including sociology. In the course of their study, students will learn not just fundamental academic knowledge but also the skills which will be necessary for them in society. The course is divided into 5 groups: Language and Representation, Environment and Society, Text and Logic, Nature and Creativity, and Society and Careers.

Physical Education

Through physical activity, students will become more familiar with how their body works, how to maintain it, and how to increase their physical strength.

Foreign Languages

Students have the opportunity to learn not just English but also a range of other languages including Chinese, Korean and several European languages. The ability to speak several languages and understand different cultures is of great importance in todayfs international world.
For exchange students, there is a special Japanese course to help them with their academic studies. There is also a program to support students wishing to take the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
