The MA course in Japanese Literature offers students the chance to study Japanese literature of different historical periods and gain a wide understanding of language and history. Through working in depth on a topic of their own choosing they will be able to acquire the knowledge necessary for a career as a scholar or a high school teacher.
Students study works of literature from the earliest times to the present and learn a variety of literary and historical approaches to conducting research. In their study of language, students learn about literary theory, dialects and the teaching of Japanese.
Once students have chosen their area of specialization, they receive close personal supervision to enable them to complete their thesis. The theses are presented at the annual meeting of the Japanese Literature Association and published in the university's own Bulletin of Research.
