The Foreign Language Research Institute (FLRI) of Gunma Prefectural Women's University was established in 2001 under the directorship of Yasushi Akashi, the former United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, to help promote reform of English language education in Gunma. The program of reform set out in the Proposal for the Improvement of English Language Education has formed the basis of the FLRI's wide-ranging activities. These have included not just lectures and symposia to raise awareness about the globalizing society in which we are living, but also courses and events where people can learn the necessary skills, particularly English skills, to take a more active role in the world. Although most of the FLRI's daily work is now centered on teaching students at the university, it still seeks to influence the course of English language education by offering specialist knowledge and support to a wide variety of innovative projects within the prefecture.
